About LIBS

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a type of atomic emission spectroscopy which uses a highly energetic laser pulse as the excitation source. The laser is focused to form a plasma, which atomizes and excites samples. In principle, LIBS can analyse any matter regardless of its physical state, be it solid, liquid or gas. Because all elements emit light of characteristic frequencies when excited to sufficiently high temperatures, LIBS can (in principle) detect all elements, limited only by the power of the laser as well as the sensitivity and wavelength range of the spectrograph & detector.

About NASLIBS

The purposes of the Society are scientific, educational, literary, charitable, and no other. In furtherance of these purposes, the business and objectives of the society shall be
– to advance the understanding of laser plasmas, laser plasma spectroscopy, and the application of laser plasmas to practical measurements,
– to bring together scientists of various backgrounds and disciplines,
– to facilitate the integration and application of research directed toward improvement of LIBS,
– to promote education in LIBS and related disciplines,
– to inform the general public on the results and implications of current research in LIBS and
– to promote other activities that will contribute to the development of LIBS.

Meeting

The NASLIBS biannual meeting will be held at SciX, the conference of the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies. This year the conference will be held at Providence, Rhode Island from from Sep 27th- Oct 2nd, 2015.Besides a full program (11 sessions) of LIBS papers, NASLIBS attendees will be able to attend hundreds of other talks in related areas, such as Raman, ICP-OES, and other spectroscopies.

We thank all the sponsors- Andor, Applied Spectra, TSI, Quantel, Avantes, BwTek, Princeton Instruments- for supporting LIBS sessions at SCIX 2015. To know more about the meeting, program and our sponsors, please visist meetings section of this page or click below.

What We Do

NASLIBS

The North American Society for Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy exists to promote the spread of scientific knowledge, advancing the understanding of laser plasma spectroscopy in North America and around the world. We support conferences, forums, and other educational activities to connect scientists and inform the public of the results and implications of current research in LIBS. NASLIBS is a nonprofit corporation.

Name of the Group

The name of the Society shall be the North American Society for Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy.  The abbreviation “NASLIBS” is sometimes used in place of the name of this organization, including in these Bylaws.  The method studied is commonly referred to as “LIBS.”.

Purpose

The purposes of the Society are scientific, educational, literary, charitable, and no other. In furtherance of these purposes, the business and objectives of the society shall be (a) to advance the understanding of laser plasmas, laser plasma spectroscopy, and the application of laser plasmas to practical measurements; (b) to bring together scientists of various backgrounds and disciplines; to (c) facilitate the integration and application of research directed toward improvement of LIBS; to (d) promote education in LIBS and related disciplines, and (e) inform the general public on the results and implications of current research in LIBS; and to (f) promote other activities that will contribute to the development of LIBS..
